Self-esteem just may be the Holy Grail when it comes to leadership development. It is perhaps the only human characteristic that determines how we see ourselves from the inside while directly correlating to how others perceive us on the outside.

While typically not a topic discussed over coffee, self-esteem is a matter of critical importance for you as a leader. Self-esteem holds you accountable to how you interact and work with others… self-esteem keeps you centered…self- esteem is the genesis for how well others respect you. It has an effect on how you think, feel, act – and your business results. Self-esteem determines your ability to be an Authentic Leader.

In short, your self-esteem reflects the degree to which you feel comfortable with yourself as you are, believe that you have inherent value as a unique individual and demonstrate confidence in your ability to successfully achieve your own measure of success.

For better or worse… we are all extensions of the networks we have built – or the lack thereof. Those who are devoted to the intensive cultivation of the vine will prosper and grow, while those who do not, well, you can guess the outcome…

I think, as business leaders, we often have a Superman complex.  We rarely seek advice because we believe we should be able to do everything, know everything, and be everything to everyone at all times.  I, too, suffer from this illusion more often than not.

Some confrontation at work is expected (even healthy), however if there are individuals in your organization with Chronic Confrontationitis, it’s up to you, as a leader, to protect your organization. Afflicted individuals have the nasty habit of separating people from information, social situations, peers, tools to do their job, affection and admiration… as well as hard earned acknowledgement and praise.  They actively create a culture where people feel “less than”, causing both emotional and physical stress.
