If you have followed my posts on this topic so far, you know where I stand on the term Global… as well as Leadership.  Today, let’s talk about what it means to work Across Boundaries…. because the reality is that it can mean many things to many people.

In my world, working across boundaries is about lateral thinking… really comprehending that you are a single piece of a much larger puzzle and that your piece has a significant impact on the larger whole. It also means having the capacity to move across those boundaries to absorb knowledge from one context or discipline and apply it back into your area of expertise to create a free-flow of information – increasing your knowledge and the potential to “create a better mousetrap”. The customer experience today is a battlefield in the global marketplace, as well as one of the only truly sustainable sources of competitive advantage. Today’s customers share their opinions around the clock and around the globe, making the customer’s experience central to your business performance.  The obvious truth is that it doesn’t take many bad experiences to lose a customer.

In a recent global customer experience study by AchieveGlobal, 93% of companies said they would refuse to do business with a company again after three or fewer bad experiences. Multiple sources indicate businesses can lose 20-30% of their revenue from poor customer experiences – yet many fail to focus on the their customer experience strategy, creating a global performance chasm.

The Customer Experience Does Drive Your Business Results  

Over the past several weeks, I have communicated to you what I believe are some of the most challenging aspects of leadership today.  These are the facets of business, that because we do not do them well, we repeatedly see decreased motivation and loyalty, less than competent leaders and, ultimately, poor business results.  I began to think seriously about these challenges long ago – perhaps fifteen years ago!  For twenty years, I was a leader in global business and now, two decades later, I am still hearing of the exact same challenges from my clients as an Executive Coach, International Speaker and Author. Just as companies continue to reinvent themselves, leaders will always continue to face defining moments.  As those moments present themselves, some leaders will prove themselves risk adverse, preferring to observe and play it safe…while still others will accept the challenge and seek to make a significant and lasting difference – for their organizations and the people within. How you handle your defining moments will determine your legacy.

The sad truth is that most leaders do not think about their legacy until it is far too late. Commitment and planning are required – legacies do not happen by themselves. Organizational legacies are built over time and have a “living” quality. In other words, your legacy grows and evolves as you do. Legacy is your contribution, your value-add… Unlike an heirloom, your legacy must be digested and absorbed by others before it can be passed on. If you do not consider and plan for your legacy, you will probably still leave one – but it will most likely not be the legacy you had in mind! Continue Reading…

As the New Year approaches, once again I find myself reflecting on both the challenges and the incredible opportunities that have presented themselves throughout 2013.  As I look back, there have been both good and not so good, but for the most part… I have been incredibly blessed.

The truth is, you have a choice to make. We are all experiencing an extensive lag that will impact each and every one of our careers and will result in very serious consequences to every one of us – this is nothing new.  You are increasingly expected to do far more, with far less, in a much shorter amount of time.
