Winning

Slide1Are you one of those 100’s of thousand’s of “leaders” out there who are merely meeting your established goals and collecting a paycheck?  Isn’t there more to life? Shouldn’t you be seeking to maximize your own potential, walk in your own greatness, and WIN at the great game of business? It seems to me that there are actually many parities between great leadership and coaching the best professional athletes…

How would you feel knowing YOU make the impossible possible? Can you imagine the difference YOU could make if you were the best leader you could possibly be? What would it feel like to wake up every day energized by the idea of the amazing things YOU are achieving at work… and in life? To have a plan to overcome your biggest obstacles to create and deploy championship-defining strategies? To create your legacy as a game changer instead of just a game player? To know every day that YOU, yes YOU, are making a real and significant difference!

Well, here are some realities of what it takes to WIN as an exceptional leader, much the same as coaching a world-renowned sports team:

  • You have to want it more – never let up or give up: Lead your team with passion and confidence.
  • You can only become an exceptional leader in the process of producing exceptional results.
  • Know that what you say is possible…IS possible. Conviction, my friend…
  • Realize that before you can transform your organization, you must first transform yourself – and commit to doing so. Never ask others to do what you are not willing to do yourself!
  • Remember that the stand you take is who you are – define your identity from your commitment to changing the game, not your history (what got you here will not get you where you want to be).
  • Leverage a wise and knowledgeable mentor – identify and engage a real game-changer – commit yourself to continual learning through observation, emulation, and conversation.
  • Recognize and appreciate that the journey is of far more importance and value than the destination will ever be.
  • Leverage creative collaboration – ensure you have A Team players for all positions and lead by example into the toughest of matches.
  • Always exhibit good sportsmanship – your fan club as well as your opponents are always watching.
  • Practice 360 degree leadership – know what others perceive as your strengths and weaknesses & keep your playbook flexible.
  • Know that competition is good – it pushes potential to new heights when leveraged for home court advantage.

While this may seem a daunting list, it is achievable. It will require hard work, a strong and unwavering commitment, and a monumental belief in yourself, but YOU CAN become an exceptional leader! How you move forward into your impossible future is up to you, but if you truly want to win, I would strongly recommend one action item above all else – Partner with an exceptional Executive Coach that will help you to define your impossible future, hold you accountable to it, and stand in your greatness (even when you can’t).

Everyone wants to WIN, but few have the where-with-all to pursue WINNING with everything they have… and even fewer have the insight to understand that they cannot do it alone.

What are you doing to ensure you are consistently WINNING?

A separate, but inter-related key to success lies within YOU.  In today’s complex global business environment, as a leader you are the driving force and the magnet that draws people in – someone who has the ability to lead, connect, and (most importantly)  to ignite a fire within the global workforce that will result in invaluable contributions that will drive personal development and organizational success to levels never anticipated or previously dreamed of.  You are a key resource to the organization, and as such, you need to understand that how you allow yourself to be leveraged as a resource directly correlates with the success of your global teams and organization.

How people perceive you, your words and actions, will define you across the globe. How you relate to people, from all cultures, will determine to a large extent, your ability to succeed. Do people from all cultures and geographies see you as an inspiration?  Someone to follow, someone to believe in, someone to trust? Are you a partner? Does your global team perceive that they are a critical component to your vision and direction? Our research tells us over and over again, that people follow those they trust and those they are inspired by.

Self-esteem just may be the Holy Grail when it comes to leadership development. It is perhaps the only human characteristic that determines how we see ourselves from the inside while directly correlating to how others perceive us on the outside.

While typically not a topic discussed over coffee, self-esteem is a matter of critical importance for you as a leader. Self-esteem holds you accountable to how you interact and work with others… self-esteem keeps you centered…self- esteem is the genesis for how well others respect you. It has an effect on how you think, feel, act – and your business results. Self-esteem determines your ability to be an Authentic Leader.

In short, your self-esteem reflects the degree to which you feel comfortable with yourself as you are, believe that you have inherent value as a unique individual and demonstrate confidence in your ability to successfully achieve your own measure of success.

As the New Year approaches, once again I find myself reflecting on both the challenges and the incredible opportunities that have presented themselves throughout 2013.  As I look back, there have been both good and not so good, but for the most part… I have been incredibly blessed.

New Year Resolve

I find myself to be both humbled and ever so grateful that you’ve given me the opportunity to connect with you – allowing me to share my thoughts and global leadership experience with you… to come to know some of you just a little bit. As I look back, there have been so many valuable interactions, comments and insights from all of you. I am so fortunate to have you in my network and I look forward to continuing our journey of continuous growth together in 2014. These are the things that truly matter… Continue Reading…

A positive attitude is a frame of mind – our perspective, as leaders, has much to do with how we engage and deal with challenges.

Like it or not, you are in the superhero business.  As a leader, whatever industry you are in, you need to always remember that the energy you bring to everything you do will be noticed and amplified. Your personal attitude is a huge part of what you project to your team and organization. If you aren’t demonstrating a positive, supportive and encouraging attitude, how can you expect others to?
